DFI Day 9

Revision:

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

The whole 9 weeks of this kaupapa has opened my eyes in terms of experiencing working in the many modes of google. What Dorothy spoke about this morning, the A3 concept of Ubiquitous learning made so much sense. Have an easy transition of the kaupapa 'Learn, Create, Share' through learning anytime, anywhere and any pace gives our learners an opportunity to develop according to where they are at. It was a great way of wrapping up the DFI.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

Having spent a good bit of time over the last week reviewing what we had covered in the google space preparing for the exam, it also gave me time to reflect on the many tools available to me to move into a ubiquitous environment as a leader, one where all the staff can collaborate more effectively. I have gained confidence to move ahead from the microsoft environment to the google environment.

I will keep a catalogue of all the different resources that have been shared with us over the 9 weeks. I can see these as becoming a useful 'go to' place for digital resources.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

I've learnt aspects of google where I can communicate with them more effectively. My students are already ahead of me in a lot of these working environments with all the teachers having already completed DFI, so I can probably learn a lot from them!!

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

I have already set up different forums with friends and family as a result of participating in DFI.

 DFI Day 8

Computational Thinking:

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

Equity through access to an affordable device should not be a barrier to students learning. Being active participants in this digital world. Digitally fluent students will enable them to do this.  Spent a good session with Phil on coding. A bit of fun. Check the link! Not sure how if I'd use it but I may as a fun way of interacting with the students.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

This was a great session to reflect on what we are doing with our Digital Technologies. In terms of Paparore, we will need to put all the pieces of the jigsaw together. See what it appropriate for us and that it fits within our local curriculum.Check on staff and teachers where they are at with this and get a collaboration of ideas, thoughts, practices, goals and outcomes we want for our students

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

I Think I can use the coding as a motivational tool, programme to connect with students. The important thing for me is ensuring we are enabling teachers to deliver a quality programme and students are engaged in their learning. I need to ensure we prioritise right to have the support and resources to do this! through the

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

Keep exploring and engaging in the google space so that it becomes second nature! Having the opportunities to do this especially over the last 2-3 sessions has been helpful.

 DFI Day 7

Devices:

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

The sessions today gave me a greater understanding, an insight to what the teachers at Paparore have being involved in in terms of getting set up to deliver the 'Learn, Create, Share' kaupapa through a digital platform. Exploring how my teachers use the devices as a tool to access and/or capture learning in terms of what an iPad or chromebook offers has been a good insight. I appreciate the work and voyage they have all being on.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

I think its given me a greater appreciation of the mahi my staff have done. I know my staff work hard for the betterment of our students [as they should] but our teachers are genuinely hard-working and passionate about the Paparore kaupapa! The last 7 weeks has built my confidence in google apps. There's still a lot to do for me to become completely confident in the google space but I know it will come with time!

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

I don't have a class but I realise I need to be the person to support my staff to have the tools/devices necessary to provide a quality learning environment

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

Keep immersing myself in the use of the different tools. Take time to explore what apps could be useful for my role as leader. Collaborate with others to expand our knowledge!

Day 6: Enabling Access - Sites

My WiFi was down for a couple of hours [Damn technician turned up early] so once it was reinstated I spent time watching video of site creation. Found this time useful to start another site. Wasn't under pressure with an audience I felt like I could wander off and explore different things! Sir's Practice Site

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?
The different ways of communicating via a digital platform - there are many ways we can engage with students, teachers, other schools. Creating networks is a great opportunity to communicate in various ways.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
Working at my own pace. I found having the time to myself to work away at developing the foundation of a site was worthwhile

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
Sharing the outstanding achievements of the students. The Hapara sessions is worthwhile. Navigating my way around this has given me a greater understanding the usefulness of this as a principal.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?
The more I work away with the different google tools is increasing my confidence and capability. Working at my own pace in a slow, structured pace is good for me. Revise and practice! Working out what works best for me and what would be useful in my role as principal

Day 5: 'Collaborate'

  • What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

    • Everything seemed to come together today. I enjoyed Listening to Dorothy and Kerry this morning talking about Visible learning [and teaching]. It's all about 'no surprises, knowing what is expected. Learning should be visible to learners! Interesting korero about removing barriers but also knowing what the boundaries [expectations] are. I love the idea reinforcing the concept of embracing the technology to making teaching & learning fun!
  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

    • What Kerry had to share about multi modal was motivating. There were a lot of ideas shared that really    made sense and resonated with me. Especially the ways students like to learn. It's not the same for  everyone and we shouldn't assume that our tamariki learn best the way we 'default' to. Giving them the opportunities to create and share in a way that fits them is something we need to embrace. Hooking students into their learning will undoubtedly be easier if this is done.
    • I feel like I'm starting to become more comfortable in using the different aspects of google to present. I loved today's session on 'Sites.' I wouldn't have a 'class site' but I will definitely develop a 'Sir's Site' for students and whanau to look at!
  • What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

    • Developing a 'principal's site' to sit alongside all the class sites. It would be an area for achievements,
  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

    • Time management. Becoming confident enough to work with the different tools in google would give me more time in other areas

Day 4: 'Dealing With Data'

Another great day with lots of new tricks and traits. I was looking forward to this part of DFI because organising data and showing it in an easily-to-read and understand is something that I've been meaning to get to. Being able to manipulate and configure the way a report looks is probably what I want most out of DFI.

  • What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

The basics of working with sheets. [I was in the remedial class]. Had a good play with data. I feel pretty                confident that I have the basics sorted to be able to work with data other than what is on our SMS. Using             data to inform teaching, showing student progress over different times and being able to show Board,                    whanau and the student/s will be helpful. It will lead to evidencing student voice.

  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

I enjoyed my first play with forms. Haven't really thought about how I would use it but I'm sure there will                be plenty of opportunities to do so. I am slowly building in confidence with the similarities of functions                    throughout the google suite

  • What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

Google maps, forms, sheets, they could all be utilised by the learners in their own 'create' space. Giving                students more opportunities to create a graph, a quiz, using maps to display maths, geography, history,                etc. Our learners should be given ample opportunities to create and present their learning in various                     formats!

  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

Working from home is not a barrier. With a possibility of COVID hitting us again, we have the tools and                 capabilities to carry on as 'normally' as possible. Our staff and students are in a space where they can                 carry on with their learning as well as staying connected minimising the health & well-being of our                         tamariki

DFI Media

Had a great day i tenei ra!

I was fortunate to have explored more about Hapara yesterday with Maria so we reflected on some of the many functions that Hapara offers. As leader of the school, it's like a one stop shop to scope the students learning so this is going to be helpful in terms of navigating the students learning in one place.

Our session on Create [Hanga], especially the film archives, 'The Heart of the Matter,' was inspirational when you think about Create as making a difference to students learning, how create is motivational to student learning! It is something I want to revisit and explore more in our own school curriculum!

Had a cool hangout with Dorothy looking at creating master slides. Had a couple of templates that I have started.

Without realising it, I had already created a YouTube channel! I managed to create a couple of playlists. Thanks Maria for showing me how to embed this video which is part of the original playlist I created when I created my channel a couple of years back!!!

Elijahs Blog

What was the teaching design behind this post?
This is probably a post where students were asked to share something exciting that has happened whilst in lockdown. They needed to present this in the form of a video using unspoken clues / inferencing. It was definitely a fun post which included the whole family
What was the learner’s response ie the post content?
The student and the whole family were included so there was some home / school learning done together. It was obvious emotion so the exercise was motivational with the use of cupcakes that the adults possibly had some involvement in as there was obvious element of surprise.
Who responded to the post and how did this support the learning experience or contribute more to the learning of the child?
There were only 2 reactions via the blog which was disappointing I'm sure for the child but I guess they were happy anyway

Digital Fluency Intensive

Day 2: Workflow
Today we looked at 'Workflow.'

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani Great Kaupapa and pedagogy?
The kaupapa focuses on two key components; increasing teacher effectiveness and accelerating learning outcomes for our students. DFI is one of the key support initiatives to provide teachers, TA's and our admin staff to have the knowledge and support to work and support students in a digital environment. The pedagogy is Learn, Create , Share. [Ako, Hanga, Tohatoha]. One aspect of this is that I will go to mt senior team and the teachers to look at what does LEARN look like in our kura!
What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
WI have found the morning sessions so useful and I recognise and acknowledge that I need to move into the google platform. I recognise that there is so much smooth interaction and transfer of information from different spaces and the ability to share information much more easily. It's the first time I have had a real look at the different components and functions of Hapara so it was useful to see that it has many uses.
What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
For me, there are many things I've taken out of today's session. As the leader, navigating the Hapara space to keep in tune with the students mahi. Maria and I have organised a Meet next week to get a better understanding of its applications.
What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?
Looking at the 'gmail' and 'calendar' deliveries this morning as well as a quick browse through the Hapara site, I can see these all as useful tools. I will definitely be exploring these more and implement them into what I currently use [outlook, word table for calendar]. Overall, today's session has helped me see a clear and wider view of what is available both on a personal and a professional level. 'Google Keep' is something that is completely new to me. I hadn't heard of it. I shall be exploring this over the next week.

Day 1:
Today we had the first of 9 days working in the Cohort 3 of 2020 in DFI. Very intensive indeed!

1. What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa & pedagogy?
As the principal I have heard the Manaiakalani message many times. As a school, we are fully committed to embracing this kaupapa. We are 3 years into the Manaiakalani journey. The recent disruption to school because of Covid 19 reinforced to us just how important this has become. Learning was minimised because of our participation. We also saw benefits in terms of increased whanau support and engagement.
2. What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
I found that I needed to ensure all the systems were in place before the day. I thought that I had the 'new' version of Meet but there was a newer one. so the first session was a bit difficult. I could not see the presentation. I found the flow of the day and the content was very useful and how everything fits into place. I realise there is a lot of mahi needed to up-skill and become confident in the various spaces!
3. What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
I know that all of our learners are already using blogs to share their learning. Capturing their work and sharing this, following up by posting helpful comments as a way of motivating them to improve is important.
I know not to rely on them to help me in my learning journey in this space.
4. What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?
Time, time and more time! Like anything, the more I engage and participate in this space, the more confident and capable I will be! Looking forward to it!
